Knowing what ’smart’ actually is when it comes to cities

McGaffin, R. (2013) Knowing what ’smart’ actually is when it comes to cities, Urban Green File. (Knowledge Transfer Programme)

Abstract

Evaluating a city’s performance and development in terms of sustainability requires a very different approach and skill set than evaluation of the production of its built form. Cities are not merely the sum of its buildings. The scope of aspects that shape a city stretches further and is often less tangible than that of creating a single building. To feel a city’s pulse and respond to it appropriately means giving thought to the way we construct our knowledge of a city.
