SUMMARY:Cities of integrity – innovative approaches to tackling corruption and cultivating a culture of integrity\, trust and openness in urban development
DESCRIPTION:Cities of Integrity project hosts a panel discussion at the World Urban Forum in Abu Dhabi\, on Sunday\, 9 February 2020 from 14:00 to 16:00. \nUrban innovation flows from multiple actors securely\, independently seeking opportunities for improvement of their livelihoods\, their homes and their social fabric. Urban development that is underpinned by a culture of integrity\, transparency and accountability is an essential condition minimising the risks that would otherwise block this innovation and investment. You may plan and wish for a prosperous\, inclusive\, equitable\, resilient or sustainable city but if norms of integrity and openness are corroded by corruption none of these aspirations can be achieved. Our event will provide a platform to raise our shared understanding of the urban corruption risks at hand. We will discuss the latest facts and figures related to the major integrity challenges in urban development\, their scale\, scope and development over time in the cities of both the global north and south. At least equally important we will take this empirical overview as a point of departure to embark on a joint exploration of the innovative tools and approaches available to build and nurture strong cultures of integrity at the city scale. By weaving together insights and perspectives from urban planners\, architects and urban policy-makers on the one side and experts and practitioners on transparency\, integrity and governance we will launch an inspirational\, interactive conversation around the many practical tools and innovative levers that can be activated to architect and nurture such cultures of urban integrity. Questions to explore with the audience include: what are the major ”integrity vulnerabilities” in urban development? What strategies to promote urban cultures of integrity have been found to be effective so far? What roles can the professional community of urban planners and architects play in addressing these integrity risks? What is a realistic contribution that new technologies can make beyond the hype that surrounds them? What responsibility falls to the private sector and what practical action is already coming from the business side? How can the creativity of urban place-making be harnessed? We will seek to explore these questions not just through a set of inspirational panel presentations but also by tapping into the expertise and creativity of the audience through interactive conversation formats. SUMMARY:International Transdisciplinarity Conference 2019
DESCRIPTION:The International Transdisciplinary Conference 2019\, co-organised by the University of Gothenburg and Mistra Urban Futures\, takes place 10 to 13 September 2019 in Gothenburg\, Sweden. \nOur societies are facing critical points in their development\, where large challenges are becoming increasingly difficult to handle. Numerous conflicts and complexities are surfacing – to which we can see societies responding with fragmentation\, intolerance and exclusion. One way to address such developments is through societal transformation processes that implicitly include a variety of interest groups\, stakeholders and organisations. Transdisciplinary research is one approach that focuses specifically on co-producing and integrating knowledge and expertise from a variety of sources\, including communities\, research\, cities and businesses. It is an approach that is driven by the need to create processes where values and transformations towards a more just and sustainable society are openly debated. \nThe aim of this conference\, Joining Forces for Change\, is to bring together actors from different professional mandates\, disciplines and sectors to engage and discuss practical examples and case studies that approach societal transformation through boundary breaking collaboration. The conference invites practitioners and researchers from government and administrative organisations and agencies\, interest groups from community and business\, and researchers and students from across the university. The overall focus is on what we can learn from our collaborative experiences\, case studies and practices regarding wider societal transformation\, methodological innovations and theoretical development. SUMMARY:The Integrated City: Local Cultural Policy and Sustainable Integrated Urban Development
DESCRIPTION:This seminar at UCT’s African Centre for Cities looks to continue a set of dialogues around cultural governance and sustainable urban development in South Africa. It brings two processes together: \n\n  The Local Cultural Policy Agenda: South African cities are potential spaces for dynamic change as a result of being the nexus for flows of people and ideas. Culture is increasingly seen as significant in urban transformation.  A long-term approach to exploring innovative urban governance frameworks that forward the use of culture has been proposed as a research agenda. DESCRIPTION:The Integration Syndicate is a three-phase project that started off with a series of nine “episodes” over the course of 2017\, which explored the obstacles and solutions to social-spatial integration in the Cape Town metropolitan region. It will take continued efforts and dedication to ensure this progress continues. \nOn Saturday\, 4 November the Italian Ministry of Health and the City of Milan\, will host The Global Nutrition Summit 2017 in Milan – a high-level event on nutrition and food for healthier futures. The summit will take stock of global progress toward the nutrition-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and World Health Assembly global nutrition targets. DESCRIPTION:The Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) and the African Centre for Cities (ACC) will jointly host a conference on Refractions of the National\, the Popular\, and the Global in African cities. \nVenue: Wallenberg Research Centre in Stellenbosch\, South Africa\nDate: Monday\, 31 July & Tuesday\, 1 August 2017 \nThere has been a significant expansion of academic research on the specificities of African urbanisms\, diverse urban imaginaries and politics over the last decade. In the wake of recent formal policy shifts in acknowledging the importance of urbanisation and pro-active policy making on the one hand\, and a rise in urban-based social mobilization on the other\, it is opportune to create an academic space for cross-pollination and reflection. \nThe theme of the conference is captured in its title: Refractions of the National\, the Popular\, and the Global in African cities. Each of the three issues may be interrogated as follows: \n\nHow is the nationality and the nation-state manifested in the city\, if at all? To what extent is the political and the social character of the state regime expressed in the city and its governance?\nTo what extent\, in what form\, and with what effect have popular forces been able for make themselves heard and influential in the city\, in recent years? Why or why not? We are here thinking of protest movements\, of civic associations and of reform coalitions of progressive city government.\nTo what extent and how has the recent and current commodity boom meant a globalization of the city? DESCRIPTION:start again the new road at dawn.\nyesterday’s road has led\nto yesterday’s destination.\ntoday is a new chaos.\na new journey. a new city.\nneeding new paths. and new standards. \nBen Okri – The Ruin and The Forest \nCape Town remains stubbornly segregated\, with a large portion of the population living in undesirable conditions. Access to resources is still skewed towards the formal art market based in the City Bowl. Despite this\, there are numerous people engaging in critical and creative ways of re-articulating the potential of the city through art. Increasingly\, public-facing art is playing a central role in imagining a free\, inspired and inclusive reality. \nPublic Art and the Power of Place\, initiated by the African Centre for Cities at UCT\, with support from the National Lotteries Commission\, emerged as an experiment in finding new ways of representing and interconnecting with socio-political urban issues in Cape Town. It involved supporting seven public art projects in Cape Town’s townships in 2015. From Khayelitsha to Bonteheuwel\, optimistic and determined individuals explored the significance and impossibilities of place outside the City Bowl. \nThe ACC is excited to invite you to the closing event of the project at the Cape Town Library (Corner Darling and Parade Streets)\, where the stories and reflections of these projects will be used to ignite an open and constructive conversation about the present and the future of public art within the context of Cape Town. DESCRIPTION:Revaluing the City: Land\, Infrastructure and the Environment as a Catalyst for Change \nAfrica is experiencing an urban revolution involving the most rapid urbanization in history\, but amid severe constraints. There are calls to grow local and national economies\, enable employment\, upgrade governance\, improve global competitiveness\, and reduce inequalities and poverty. Problems of income inequality\, economic exclusion\, food insecurity\, inadequate transportation networks\, lack of urban services\, environmental degradation\, and climate change are huge challenges for cities across Africa. \nTransforming African cities on their own terms\, and making urban formations sustainable and equitable is an unprecedented challenge. \nStudy Space IX will explore these urban growth issues in South Africa’s oldest city\, Cape Town\, a profoundly unequal city from its days of slavery in the 17th century. Although labeled the continent’s least African city\, Cape Town shares the ingredient of ‘slum urbanism’ with poverty and social stress in growing\, sprawling informal settlements. There is relentless pressure to increase the density of residential land\, and to revalue the city’s recreational\, agricultural and public land\, and ecosystem services. \nDuring the course of the week\, twenty participants will develop a wider\, ‘southern’ perspective on balancing issues related to urban growth with a focus on income inequality and economic exclusion. Guest lectures will be on a variety of topics\, including: \n— Planning equitable and sustainable development\n— Property rights and land use law\n— Affordable housing and housing finance\n— Taxation and infrastructure finance\n— Cultural heritage and historic preservation\n— Environmental law\n— Climate change \n  \nThe ACC is hosting Study Space IX on behalf of the Center for the Comparative Study of Metropolitan Growth in the College of Law at Georgia State University\, Atlanta\, USA. The Center’s ninth intensive study week gives professionals\, practitioners and academics an opportunity to sharpen their understanding of metropolitan affairs in conversation with local experts. Previous Study Spaces have been held in Barcelona\, Bogota\, Denver\, Rio de Janeiro\, Istanbul\, Medellin\, Panama and Warsaw.

DESCRIPTION:The African Centre for Cities in collaboration with Mistra Urban Futures is hosting a workshop on Realising the Just City. \nThe signing of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 demonstrated that there is an increasing global pledge to foster just cities that are ‘inclusive\, safe\, resilient and sustainable’. Although there is a shared commitment to socio-spatial justice\, how this can be realised is more complicated. This workshop aims to draw representatives from academic institutions\, civil society and the public sector together to discuss how just cities are understood\, and how to achieve them. \nMistra Urban Futures is made up of five local interaction platforms in four cities around the world: Cape Town (based at ACC)\, Gothenburg\, Greater Manchester\, Kisumu and Malmö. The purpose is to develop coproduced\, collaborative and comparative research across the cities. DESCRIPTION:The Association of African Planning Schools (AAPS) is hosting its fourth all-schools conference in 2014. The conference theme is ‘African Urban Planning and the Global South: Pedagogy\, Research\, Practice’. \nThe AAPS 2014 Conference will address the central themes and problems of African urbanization. It will focus on developing our understanding of these issues\, and how planning curricula can respond to them. While the conference is focused on sub-Saharan Africa\, the discussion will be extended to other contexts in the global South. \nAAPS 2014 will feature keynote presentations from a number of international experts on cities and urbanization in Africa and the global South\, including Edgar Pieterse (African Centre for Cities)\, Oren Yiftachel (Ben-Gurion University) and Colin MacFarlane (Durham University). \nThe conference is aimed at urban planning educators\, researchers and practitioners seeking to enhance their knowledge of the contemporary issues and debates surrounding African and Southern cities and urbanization. It will also appeal to other built environment professionals\, as well as academics in related disciplines with an interest in urban issues. \nThis is the first time that the AAPS conference will be open to wider attendance. AAPS welcomes submissions from those outside Africa working on urban issues in the global South.
